Why this applies to Dalteparin

Dalteparin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

There is some concern that Ceylon leadwort might potentiate the effects of anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs and possibly increase the risk of bleeding. Ceylon leadwort root extract has been shown to decrease platelet adhesion and prolong bleeding in animals. However, this effect has not yet been demonstrated in humans. Until more is known, use cautiously in patients taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Dalteparin (Fragmin) is already a powerful blood thinner that you inject to keep clots from forming. The concern here is that Ceylon Leadwort may add to that blood-thinning effect rather than work against it. In animal studies, the root extract made platelets stick together less and lengthened bleeding time. Stack that on top of dalteparin and you could, in theory, see more bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or harder-to-stop bleeding from cuts.

Now, the honest part: this has only been seen in lab and animal research, not in people, so we can't say how strong it really is. Still, because bleeding is serious, I'd play it safe. Please don't start Ceylon Leadwort without first checking with your doctor or pharmacist.

Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy.

About Dalteparin Injection

What Is Dalteparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fragmin

Fragmin (dalteparin) injection is used to prevent blood clots (deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism) in patients having abdominal surgery, hip replacement surgery, or in medical patients who are severely immobile during a serious illness. It is also used to reduce the risk of dangerous complications from unstable angina and a type of heart attack called non-Q-wave myocardial infarction, given alongside aspirin.

Fragmin is also used for the extended treatment of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE — blood clots in the veins or lungs) to prevent recurrence in adult cancer patients, and for the treatment of symptomatic VTE in children from birth (gestational age at least 35 weeks). Fragmin is not intended for the immediate (acute) treatment of VTE.
