Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), and others.

Of the ingredients in this combo product, dextromethorphan is the one that matters here. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear it. A compound in Ceylon Leadwort, plumbagin, has slowed that enzyme down in lab dish studies only. In theory, if the enzyme works slower, dextromethorphan could build up and you might feel more of its effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, or in higher amounts a spacey or restless feeling.

Here's the reassuring part: this has never actually been reported in people, and the evidence is only test-tube and animal data. So I wouldn't panic. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two, especially if you take Ceylon Leadwort in concentrated supplement doses.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for your DA Chewable (dextromethorphan, methscopolamine, and phenylephrine). A compound in Ceylon Leadwort called plumbagin has been shown, in test-tube studies only, to slow down an enzyme called CYP3A4. Dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant) leans on that enzyme to be cleared from your body. If it's blocked, dextromethorphan could build up a bit, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy.

That said, this is only theoretical and has never been reported in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Plumbagin itself can be irritating in larger doses too. To be safe, just mention to your pharmacist or doctor that you're considering this supplement before combining them.
