These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Ceylon Leadwort interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Ceylon Leadwort in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
1 of 3Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel
Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with your birth control pill (Ovral and similar combos of ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel). A compound in Ceylon Leadwort called plumbagin has been shown, in a lab dish only, to slow down an enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps process the estrogen part of your pill. In theory, blocking that enzyme could let estrogen levels drift a bit higher, which can mean more nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or bloating.
The honest part: this has never actually been seen in real people, and the evidence is only test-tube and animal data, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since steady hormone levels matter for birth control, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding this supplement.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your birth control pill (Ovral and similar) contains two hormones, ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel, that your body clears partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dishes, plumbagin from Ceylon Leadwort slows that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let a bit more of the hormones build up in your system, which might mean more of the usual estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.
Here's the honest part: this has only been seen in test-tube studies, never in real people, so the actual risk is uncertain and likely small. Still, I'd loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, just so someone who knows your full history can weigh in.

ESTROGENS
3 of 3Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel also falls under ESTROGENS.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your birth control pill, Lo/Ovral, works by giving your body steady doses of estrogen and a progestin to prevent pregnancy. Here's the concern with Ceylon Leadwort: in lab studies, its root extract showed anti-estrogenic activity, meaning it may push against the estrogen portion of your pill. In theory, that could blunt how well the hormones do their job.
I want to be honest about the strength of this. It comes only from test-tube and animal research, not real people, so we can't say for sure it happens in the body. Still, since reliable birth control matters, I'd hold off on combining them and check with your pharmacist or doctor first rather than risk weaker protection or breakthrough bleeding.

- Digestive complaints and poor appetite
- Skin conditions and wounds (applied to the skin)
- Joint pain and swelling
- Traditional 'metabolism-boosting' tonics
- Antimicrobial folk remedy
Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy.
