Why this applies to Flupenthixol

Flupenthixol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), and others.

Here's the gist for Flupenthixol (Fluanxol): your body relies partly on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to break this antipsychotic down. Ceylon Leadwort contains plumbagin, which in lab studies slowed that same enzyme. If that happened in a person, flupenthixol could clear more slowly and build up, meaning stronger effects and a higher chance of side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, restlessness, muscle stiffness, or tremor.

The important part: this is theoretical. It has only been seen in test-tube research, never confirmed in real people, so nobody knows if it truly matters at normal doses. I wouldn't panic, but I also wouldn't combine them on your own. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using Ceylon Leadwort alongside your flupenthixol.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has demonstrated immunosuppressant activity in animal research. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), corticosteroids (glucocorticoids), and others.

Here's the honest truth about pairing these two: the interaction on file is really about immunosuppressant medications, the kind used after transplants or for autoimmune conditions. Flupenthixol (Fluanxol) doesn't fit that group. It's an antipsychotic used for schizophrenia and sometimes low mood, and it works on dopamine signaling in the brain, not on the immune system. So the specific concern in our database (Ceylon Leadwort possibly weakening immune-suppressing drugs) doesn't really apply to flupenthixol.

On top of that, this is only laboratory and animal evidence, so it's quite theoretical even for the drugs it does involve. I still wouldn't combine them casually, since Ceylon Leadwort isn't well studied in people and plumbagin can be irritating. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.
