These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Ceylon Leadwort interacts with whole categories of medication. Fostamatinib falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ceylon Leadwort in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Fostamatinib
Fostamatinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Fostamatinib (Tavalisse) and Ceylon Leadwort. Once you swallow fostamatinib, your body turns it into its active form, R406, which is then cleared mainly by the liver enzyme CYP3A4. The plumbagin in Ceylon Leadwort has been shown to slow down that same enzyme, but only in lab dish studies so far, not in actual people.
If that lab effect did carry over to humans, fostamatinib could clear more slowly and build up. That might mean more of its usual side effects, like diarrhea, high blood pressure, nausea, or changes on liver tests. Since this is only theoretical right now, there's no need to panic. Still, before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor, and don't stop your fostamatinib on your own.

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS
2 of 2Fostamatinib also falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist of what we have on file for pairing Ceylon Leadwort with Fostamatinib (Tavalisse). A compound in the plant called plumbagin has shown immune-calming (immunosuppressant) activity, but only in lab and animal studies, not in people. So this is a theoretical concern, not something proven in real patients.
The thinking is that the supplement could nudge your immune system in the same general direction as your therapy, which makes it hard to know exactly how your platelet treatment is behaving. Fostamatinib works to keep platelets from being destroyed, and we don't want anything muddying that picture or adding extra immune effects. Since the evidence here is weak, I'd simply run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding it rather than worry too much.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Fostamatinib page
“I would treat the supplement list for fostamatinib (Tavalisse), a medicine that raises platelet counts in chronic immune thrombocytopenia, with real care. Most of what shows up here involves CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that clears fostamatinib, so grapefruit can drive its blood level up while St.”

About Ceylon Leadwort
What is Ceylon Leadwort?
- Digestive complaints and poor appetite
- Skin conditions and wounds (applied to the skin)
- Joint pain and swelling
- Traditional 'metabolism-boosting' tonics
- Antimicrobial folk remedy
Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy.
About Fostamatinib
What Is Fostamatinib Used For?
Brand name: Tavalisse
Tavalisse (fostamatinib) is used to treat thrombocytopenia — dangerously low platelet counts — in adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). It is specifically for people whose platelet counts have not improved enough with at least one earlier ITP treatment.
The goal is to raise platelet counts high enough to reduce the risk of serious bleeding. If platelet counts do not respond sufficiently after 12 weeks, the medication is typically stopped.
