Why this applies to Mometasone

Mometasone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for Mometasone: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break it down. Plumbagin, the active compound in Ceylon Leadwort, has been shown in test-tube studies only to slow that enzyme. In theory, that could let more mometasone hang around than expected.

The good news is that mometasone is usually applied to the skin (creams) or inhaled (Asmanex), so very little reaches the bloodstream. Even if this interaction were real in people, the practical effect would likely be small. With heavy or long-term use, more steroid exposure could mean thinning skin, irritation, or other steroid side effects. Since this is only lab evidence and not seen in humans, I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but do mention any supplements to your pharmacist or doctor.

Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. Mometasone Furoate topical products are used to relieve the inflammation and itching (pruritus) that come with corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses — a broad category of skin conditions that respond to steroid treatment.

Mometasone Furoate Topical Solution (Lotion) is specifically indicated for these skin conditions in patients 12 years of age and older. Mometasone Furoate cream may be used in adults and in children 2 years of age and older.
