Nusinersen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

There is some concern that Ceylon leadwort might potentiate the effects of anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs and possibly increase the risk of bleeding. Ceylon leadwort root extract has been shown to decrease platelet adhesion and prolong bleeding in animals. However, this effect has not yet been demonstrated in humans. Until more is known, use cautiously in patients taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's something worth knowing about Spinraza (nusinersen). Our interaction file flags it under blood-thinning drugs because Ceylon Leadwort may, in theory, slow down clotting and raise bleeding risk. With nusinersen, this matters in a slightly different way than usual. The medicine itself is given as a spinal tap (lumbar puncture) into the fluid around your spinal cord, and any procedure like that carries a small bleeding risk.

So the concern isn't really how the two mix in your bloodstream, it's that a supplement nudging your blood toward easier bleeding could make that injection site or surrounding area more likely to bruise or bleed. Honestly, this is based only on animal lab data, not human studies, so it's a soft signal. Still, please mention Ceylon Leadwort to your neurologist or pharmacist before your next dose.

Spinraza (nusinersen) is used to treat spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) — a genetic disease that causes progressive muscle weakness by reducing the body's ability to make a protein called SMN (survival motor neuron). Spinraza is approved for pediatric and adult patients with SMA.

Spinraza is given by intrathecal injection — directly into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord — so the medicine can reach the central nervous system where it's needed most.
