Interferon Beta-1a falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Epistane interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might have additive adverse hepatotoxic effects.
Epistane is an anabolic androgenic steroid, and more specifically a 17-alpha-alkylated androgen. Therefore, there is concern that epistane has hepatotoxic effects. Also, epistane is structurally similar to epitiostanol, which has been associated with hepatotixicity in a case series of four patients.

Here's the concern when Epistane meets Interferon Beta-1a (Rebif, Avonex): both can be hard on your liver. This isn't about one changing the strength of the other. Instead, it's a stacking effect, where two things that stress the liver may add up to more strain together than either alone. Interferon beta-1a already carries a known risk of raising liver enzymes and, rarely, causing liver injury, so adding a liver-toxic steroid like Epistane is a real worry.

To be fair, this is a theoretical caution based on how these drugs behave, not solid head-to-head data. Still, Epistane is risky and illegal to sell as a supplement. Please don't combine them without talking to your neurologist or pharmacist first.

What Is Interferon Beta-1a Intramuscular Injection Used For?

Brand names: Rebif, Avonex

  • Interferon beta-1a intramuscular injection is used to treat adults with various forms of multiple sclerosis (MS; a disease in which the nerves do not function properly and people may experience weakness, numbness, loss of muscle coordination, and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control) including:

    • clinically isolated syndrome (CIS; nerve symptom episodes that last at least 24 hours),

    • relapsing-remitting forms (course of disease where symptoms flare up from time to time), or

    • secondary progressive forms (course of disease where relapses occur more often).

  • Interferon beta-1a is in a class of medications called immunomodulators. It works by decreasing inflammation and preventing nerve damage that may cause symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
