Phenytoin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Epistane interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might have additive adverse hepatotoxic effects.
Epistane is an anabolic androgenic steroid, and more specifically a 17-alpha-alkylated androgen. Therefore, there is concern that epistane has hepatotoxic effects. Also, epistane is structurally similar to epitiostanol, which has been associated with hepatotixicity in a case series of four patients.

Here's the main concern with putting these two together: both can be hard on your liver. Phenytoin (Dilantin) is well known to occasionally cause liver irritation, and Epistane is a methylated anabolic steroid that's already considered pretty rough on the liver. Stack them and you may be doubling up on that stress, which could show up as fatigue, nausea, belly pain on the right side, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

I'll be honest, this particular warning is theoretical, based on how each is processed rather than on hard studies of the two combined. Still, since Epistane is a risky, illegal-to-sell product I'd steer clear of entirely, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before mixing anything with your phenytoin. Don't change your seizure medicine on your own.

About Phenytoin

What Is Phenytoin Used For?

Brand names: Dilantin Kapseals, Dilantin, Di-Phen, Dilantin Infatabs, Phenytek, Dilantin injection

Phenytoin is used to treat and prevent seizures. The specific types covered depend on the formulation. Oral extended-release capsules (including Phenytek), chewable tablets (including Dilantin Infatabs and Phenytoin Infatabs), and oral suspension (including Dilantin-125) are used for tonic-clonic (grand mal) and psychomotor (temporal lobe) seizures; most oral forms also cover prevention and treatment of seizures occurring during or after neurosurgery. Chewable tablets and some capsule formulations also cover complex partial seizures.

Parenteral (injectable) phenytoin sodium is used for generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus (a prolonged, life-threatening seizure emergency) and for prevention and treatment of seizures during neurosurgery. The IV form can also substitute short-term for oral phenytoin when a patient cannot take it by mouth.
