Valproic Acid falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Epistane interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might have additive adverse hepatotoxic effects.
Epistane is an anabolic androgenic steroid, and more specifically a 17-alpha-alkylated androgen. Therefore, there is concern that epistane has hepatotoxic effects. Also, epistane is structurally similar to epitiostanol, which has been associated with hepatotixicity in a case series of four patients.

Here's the heart of it: both of these can be tough on your liver. Valproic acid (Depakene) is well known for sometimes raising liver enzymes, and in rare cases it can cause more serious liver injury. Epistane is a methylated anabolic steroid that's also hard on the liver. Putting them together means you may be stacking two liver stresses at once, which could add up.

I'll be honest, this concern is theoretical, based on how each drug behaves rather than direct studies of the pair. Still, with valproic acid your doctor already watches your liver closely. Warning signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness deserve a quick call. On top of that, epistane is illegal to sell as a supplement, so please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before mixing anything like this.

What Is Valproic Acid Used For?

Valproic acid capsules (brands Valproic and Valproic Acid) and valproic acid oral solution (brand Valproic Acid) are both used to treat epilepsy. Specifically, they are approved for complex partial seizures (either alone or with other seizure types) as monotherapy or add-on therapy, and for simple and complex absence seizures as sole therapy or add-on therapy.
