Simeprevir Sodium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Moringa interacts with.

Theoretically, moringa might increase or decrease levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some in vitro research suggests that moringa inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). However, other in vitro research suggests that moringa extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes. A pharmacokinetic study in patients with HIV shows no change in the pharmacokinetics of nevirapine, which is partially metabolized by CYP3A4, when administered concomitantly with moringa leaf powder 1.85 grams daily for 14 days.

Here's the simple version. Your hepatitis C medicine, simeprevir (Olysio), is cleaned out of your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Moringa might nudge that enzyme one way or the other, so in theory it could either raise your simeprevir levels (more side effects like nausea, itching, rash, or sun sensitivity) or lower them (less help fighting the virus). Honestly, the lab data points in both directions, and a human study with a similar type of drug showed no real change.

The bottom line: this is a theoretical, weak-evidence concern, so I wouldn't panic. But because simeprevir is serious treatment, please run any moringa supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first, especially concentrated capsules rather than food amounts.

What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
