Puravive and Aminophylline, Amobarbital, Ephedrine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

Stimulant Drugs

Why this applies to Aminophylline, Amobarbital, Ephedrine

Aminophylline, Amobarbital, Ephedrine falls under Stimulant Drugs — the group Puravive interacts with.

Puravive contains Panax ginseng. Panax ginseng has demonstrated stimulant effects in some studies, which could potentially heighten the effects of other stimulant drugs (source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8879982/). It is unlikely this would result in a significant risk of side effects, but it is important to be aware of.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. The old combination product Amesec mixes aminophylline (related to caffeine) with ephedrine, both of which act as stimulants, plus amobarbital (a sedative added to take the edge off). Puravive contains Panax ginseng, which in some studies has had mild stimulant-like effects. So in theory, stacking ginseng on top of an already stimulating medicine could nudge those stimulant effects a little higher.

What might that feel like? Possibly more of the usual stimulant side effects, like a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, restlessness, or trouble sleeping. The good news is the evidence here is weak and this is rated as a minor, unlikely interaction, so for most people it won't cause real trouble. Still, if you notice your heart racing or feel wired, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before continuing both.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aminophylline, Amobarbital, Ephedrine page

“Amesec is an unusual mix, a sedative barbiturate (amobarbital) plus the stimulant ephedrine and the asthma drug aminophylline, so its interaction list pulls hard in both directions and deserves real care, with 21 of the 151 ingredients rated major. The most everyday hazard is caffeine.”

About Puravive

What is Puravive?

Puravive
  • Weight management
  • Metabolism support
  • Energy levels
  • General wellness
  • Stress and brain health

Puravive is a branded, multi-ingredient capsule marketed mainly for weight loss by claiming to boost brown fat activity, but there is no published, independent clinical research showing the product itself works for this purpose. Some individual ingredients have been studied in laboratory or small human studies, but those results do not prove the finished blend is safe or effective. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have health conditions or take medications.
