Puravive and Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Puravive interacts with whole categories of medication. Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Puravive in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates

1 of 3

Why this applies to Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan

Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan falls under Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates — the group Puravive interacts with.

Puravive contains quercetin, which has been shown in studies to mildly inhibit the CYP2C9 metabolizing enzyme. This inhibition could potentially increase the risk of side effects from drugs. A small clinical trial with healthy volunteers found that taking 500 mg of quercetin twice daily for 10 days before using diclofenac, a drug metabolized by CYP2C9, increased diclofenac plasma levels by 75% and extended its half-life by 32.5% (source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29168292/). Combining quercetin with drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 could increase the risk of side effects, so caution is advised.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence C

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist with Byvalson (nebivolol plus valsartan). Puravive contains quercetin, which can mildly slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. The valsartan part of this combo is handled in part by that pathway, so blocking it could let valsartan build up a bit. Neither drug is a prodrug, so more drug here means a slightly stronger blood-pressure-lowering effect.

In real life that might show up as dizziness, lightheadedness, unusual tiredness, or feeling faint when you stand up, since this medicine already lowers blood pressure and slows the heart rate. The evidence is on the weaker side and the effect is usually mild, so don't panic. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially if your blood pressure already runs low.

Minor

Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates

2 of 3

Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan also falls under Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates.

Puravive contains Panax ginseng. Some research suggests that Panax ginseng might slow down the activity of an enzyme called CYP2D6 by about 6%. This enzyme plays a role in breaking down drugs in our system. One study (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32557706/) found that Panax ginseng slows down the breakdown of dextromethorphan, a drug that is processed by CYP2D6, but only to a small extent. It is important to note that not all studies agree on these effects, and some suggest that Panax ginseng might not have a significant impact on CYP2D6 at all. Nevertheless, it's important to be cautious if you're taking medications that are processed by CYP2D6 and consider discussing it with your healthcare provider.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Let's talk about Byvalson, which combines nebivolol (a beta-blocker) with valsartan (a blood pressure medicine). The nebivolol part is broken down by an enzyme called CYP2D6. Puravive contains Panax ginseng, which may slow that enzyme down a little. If it does, your body could clear nebivolol a bit more slowly, leaving slightly more in your system.

In real life, that might show up as a touch more of nebivolol's usual effects: a lower heart rate, lower blood pressure, lightheadedness, or feeling more tired than usual. Honestly though, the evidence here is weak and the predicted change is tiny (around 6 percent), so for most people this won't be noticeable. Still, if you start Puravive, keep an eye on how you feel and run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Antihypertensive Drugs

3 of 3

Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan also falls under Antihypertensive Drugs.

Puravive contains quercetin, which has been found to slightly reduce blood pressure in individuals with mild hypertension (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17951477/). There is a theoretical possibility that it could enhance the blood pressure-lowering effects of antihypertensive medications.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence C

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Byvalson is really two blood pressure medicines in one pill: nebivolol (a beta blocker) and valsartan (an ARB). One ingredient in Puravive, quercetin, has shown a small blood pressure lowering effect in people with mild high blood pressure. So in theory, pairing it with Byvalson could nudge your numbers a little lower than usual.

Honestly, this is a minor and mostly theoretical concern, based on limited evidence. If your pressure does drop too far, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or get a headache, especially when standing up quickly. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Puravive, and keep an eye on your home blood pressure readings if you do start it.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.

About Puravive

What is Puravive?

Puravive
  • Weight management
  • Metabolism support
  • Energy levels
  • General wellness
  • Stress and brain health

Puravive is a branded, multi-ingredient capsule marketed mainly for weight loss by claiming to boost brown fat activity, but there is no published, independent clinical research showing the product itself works for this purpose. Some individual ingredients have been studied in laboratory or small human studies, but those results do not prove the finished blend is safe or effective. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have health conditions or take medications.
