Rabeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2C19 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP2C19 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist for rabeprazole (Pariet). Your body partly clears this acid reducer using a liver enzyme called CYP2C19. In lab dish studies, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let a little more rabeprazole linger in your system, nudging up its effects and any side effects like headache, mild nausea, gas, or diarrhea.

Now the reassuring part. This is only test-tube evidence, not something proven in people, and rabeprazole already relies less on CYP2C19 than some other acid drugs. A cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos capsules are the bigger question mark, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before using those regularly.

In test-tube studies, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that enzyme down. If that happened in people, your rabeprazole could hang around a bit longer and have a slightly stronger effect, which might mean more of its usual side effects like headache, nausea, gas, or diarrhea.

Honestly though, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one. The evidence is only lab-based and theoretical, and a normal cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. The bigger question mark is concentrated rooibos supplement capsules. If you're thinking about those, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Rabeprazole

What Is Rabeprazole Used For?

Brand name: Pariet

Rabeprazole delayed-release tablets treat a range of acid-related conditions in adults, including healing and maintenance of erosive or ulcerative GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), symptomatic GERD, duodenal ulcers, and pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. They are also used alongside antibiotics (amoxicillin and clarithromycin) to eradicate H. pylori bacteria and reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer coming back.

In adolescents 12 years and older, rabeprazole delayed-release tablets are approved for short-term treatment of symptomatic GERD. Both AcipHex and Rabeprazole Sodium delayed-release tablets share this indication set for adults and adolescents 12 and older.
