Why this applies to Acalabrutinib

Acalabrutinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the basic idea with Calquence (acalabrutinib). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this cancer medicine down. In lab dish studies, uva ursi seemed to slow that same enzyme. If that happened in people, less of the drug would get cleared and more could build up in your body.

More acalabrutinib than expected can mean more of its usual side effects, like easy bruising or bleeding, headaches, low blood counts, or a higher chance of infection. The honest catch is that this slowdown has only been seen in test tubes, never in real patients, so it's theoretical right now. Still, with a serious cancer drug I'd play it safe. Please run any uva ursi product past your oncologist or pharmacist before using it.

Theoretically, uva ursi may alter the levels of drugs transported by P-glycoprotein.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: acalabrutinib (Calquence) is moved around your body partly by a cellular pump called P-glycoprotein. In a test tube, uva ursi seemed to slow that pump down. If that happened in a person, your body might hold onto a bit more acalabrutinib than usual, which could in theory nudge up its side effects like headaches, bruising or bleeding, infections, or tiredness.

But I want to be honest about how thin this is. This effect has only been seen in lab dishes, never proven in real people, and it's rated as a minor, possible interaction. So it's more of a 'keep an eye out' note than a red alert. Since acalabrutinib is a cancer medicine, please run any uva ursi or new supplement past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. What Is Acalabrutinib Used For?

Brand name: Calquence

Calquence is used to treat adults with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) — either newly diagnosed (in combination with bendamustine and rituximab, for patients who are not candidates for a stem cell transplant) or previously treated (after at least one prior therapy). It is also used to treat adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL).

Both the capsule and tablet forms of Calquence are approved for all three of these uses. The specific combination regimen and treatment schedule depend on the condition being treated and what other medicines are used alongside it — your care team will map that out for you.
