Bexarotene falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for these two. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear bexarotene (Targretin) out of your system. In lab dish studies, uva ursi seems to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in a real person, bexarotene could clear more slowly and build up, which might mean stronger effects and more side effects, things like high triglycerides or cholesterol, low thyroid levels, headache, or low white blood cell counts.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's only been seen in test-tube work, never in actual patients, so it's mostly theoretical. Still, since bexarotene is a serious cancer medicine, please check with your oncology team or pharmacist before adding uva ursi.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. What Is Bexarotene Used For?

Brand name: Targretin

Bexarotene capsules (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) are used to treat the skin symptoms of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) in patients whose disease has not responded to at least one prior systemic treatment.

Bexarotene gel 1% (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) is used to treat the skin lesions of early-stage CTCL (Stage IA and IB) when other therapies have not worked or could not be tolerated. The gel is a topical therapy and is not intended for systemic use.
