Bosutinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your leukemia medicine bosutinib (Bosulif) is cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In laboratory testing, uva ursi has been shown to slow that same enzyme down. If that effect happened in people, bosutinib could clear more slowly and build up, which might mean stronger effects and more side effects like nausea, diarrhea, belly pain, low blood counts, or liver irritation.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. So far this has only been seen in a lab dish, not in actual patients, so it's theoretical. Still, since bosutinib is a serious cancer drug, please don't start uva ursi without first checking with your oncologist or pharmacist.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Bosutinib

What Is Bosutinib Used For?

Brand name: Bosulif

Bosutinib is used to treat Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myelogenous leukemia (Ph+ CML) — a type of blood cancer. It can be used for newly diagnosed patients or for those whose cancer has stopped responding to, or who cannot tolerate, a prior treatment.

Bosulif (the brand-name product) is approved for adults and children 1 year and older with chronic phase Ph+ CML, and for adults with accelerated phase or blast phase Ph+ CML that is resistant or intolerant to prior therapy. Generic bosutinib tablets are approved for adults only with the same range of disease phases.
