Desogestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Your birth control pill (desogestrel with ethinyl estradiol) is partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dishes, uva ursi seems to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, the estrogen and progestin in your pill could clear out a little more slowly and build up, which in theory might mean more of the usual hormone-related effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.

Here's the honest part: this has only been seen in test-tube studies, never confirmed in people, so it's very much theoretical. Uva ursi is also meant for short-term use only. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since it's your birth control, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before starting uva ursi.

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

Desogestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, uva ursi may alter the levels of drugs transported by P-glycoprotein.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the bottom line on combining uva ursi with your birth control pill (the desogestrel and ethinyl estradiol combo in Ortho-Cept, Desogen, or Marvelon). In a lab dish, uva ursi seems to block a transporter protein called P-glycoprotein, which helps move certain drugs around the body. In theory, slowing that transporter could nudge your hormone levels up a little. But this is only seen in test tubes and animals, never confirmed in real people, so I don't want you to lose sleep over it.

If anything were to happen, you might notice mild estrogen-type effects like nausea, breast tenderness, or spotting, but that's speculative here. The bigger practical concern is that uva ursi is only meant for short-term use because of liver worries. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine.
