Your birth control pill (Yaz) contains two hormones, ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone, that your liver clears using an enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish testing, uva ursi seemed to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, your body might clear these hormones a little more slowly, leaving slightly higher hormone levels. That could mean a bit more of the usual side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.

Here is the reassuring part: this was only seen in test-tube studies and has never been reported in actual people, so it is very theoretical. Still, since uva ursi can be hard on the liver and is meant only for short-term use, it is worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the honest picture if you take uva ursi alongside your Yaz (ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone). In lab dishes, uva ursi seems to slow down a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which helps move certain drugs around your body. Since the hormones in Yaz are partly handled by this transporter, blocking it could, in theory, let a bit more drug hang around. That might mean slightly more of the usual estrogen-type side effects, like nausea, breast tenderness, or bloating.

The key word here is theoretical. This has only been seen in test tubes, never in real people, and it's rated a minor interaction. Uva ursi is also meant for short-term use only. Still, since liver concerns exist with this herb, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine.
