Ethinyl Estradiol, Levonorgestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel combo) gets processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a lab dish, uva ursi seemed to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, your body might clear the hormones a little more slowly, which could nudge their levels up. With these pills, that might mean more of the usual estrogen-type side effects, like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.

Here's the honest part though: this was only seen in test-tube studies, never confirmed in actual people, so it's mostly theoretical. Uva ursi is also meant for short-term use only. Since this pill is something you rely on daily, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

Theoretically, uva ursi may alter the levels of drugs transported by P-glycoprotein.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.

If you take a combination birth control pill like Levlite or Triphasil (which contain ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel), here's the gist with uva ursi. In lab dishes, uva ursi seems to block a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which helps move certain drugs around your body. In theory, slowing that pump could let a bit more hormone hang around, which might mean slightly more typical pill side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.

The good news: this has only been seen in test tubes, never in real people, so it's a weak, theoretical concern. Since uva ursi is also meant only for short-term use, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
