Isavuconazonium Sulfate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear isavuconazonium (Cresemba). In lab dish studies, uva ursi seems to slow that same enzyme down. If that held true in people, less of the drug would get broken down, so more could build up in your system. With Cresemba, that might mean a higher chance of side effects like nausea, headache, low potassium, or liver enzyme changes.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This was only seen in test-tube research, never confirmed in actual patients, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Since Cresemba treats serious fungal infections, don't change anything on your own. Just let your doctor or pharmacist know you're considering uva ursi.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Isavuconazonium

What Is Isavuconazonium Used For?

Cresemba (isavuconazonium sulfate) is used to treat two serious, life-threatening fungal infections: invasive aspergillosis and invasive mucormycosis. These infections can spread through the body and are most dangerous in people with weakened immune systems.

Cresemba for injection is approved for adults and children 1 year of age and older. Cresemba capsules are approved for adults and children 6 years of age and older who weigh at least 16 kilograms (about 35 pounds).
