L-glutamine is generally well tolerated by healthy adults. The most common side effects are digestive: belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, gas, and stomach pain.

Headache, nausea, vomiting, and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. In rare cases, dizziness occurred at high doses but resolved when the dose was lowered.

Two people with bipolar disorder reported mania or hypomania when taking glutamine, so if you have bipolar disorder, this warrants a careful conversation with your doctor. If you have kidney or liver disease, you should only take supplemental glutamine under medical supervision.
