Here's the situation with bacopa and your rabeprazole (Aciphex). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C19 to break down and clear rabeprazole. In lab dish studies, bacopa appears to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that were to happen in real life, more rabeprazole could hang around in your system, which might mean slightly stronger effects or a touch more of the usual side effects like headache, nausea, gas, or diarrhea.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. The only evidence we have comes from test tubes, not from people, so we truly don't know if it matters in everyday use. Rabeprazole is also a pretty forgiving medicine, not one where small changes are dangerous. I wouldn't lose sleep, but do mention the bacopa to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Here's the gist for your acid reducer Aciphex. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear rabeprazole out of your body. In lab and test-tube studies, bacopa might slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in a person, a little more rabeprazole could linger, which in theory could nudge up side effects like headache, nausea, gas, or diarrhea.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical only, and the lab data actually conflict. Some studies show a mild effect, others show essentially none. Rabeprazole is also a pretty forgiving medicine, so I wouldn't lose sleep here. Still, if you plan to take bacopa regularly, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and mention any new tummy upset.

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.

What Is Rabeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Aciphex, Aciphex Sprinkle

Rabeprazole delayed-release tablets treat a range of acid-related conditions in adults, including healing and maintenance of erosive or ulcerative GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), symptomatic GERD, duodenal ulcers, and pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. They are also used alongside antibiotics (amoxicillin and clarithromycin) to eradicate H. pylori bacteria and reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer coming back.

In adolescents 12 years and older, rabeprazole delayed-release tablets are approved for short-term treatment of symptomatic GERD. Both AcipHex and Rabeprazole Sodium delayed-release tablets share this indication set for adults and adolescents 12 and older.
