Acetohexamide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Ceylon leadwort root extract has been shown to both increase and decrease blood glucose levels in animal research. This effect has not yet been demonstrated in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might reduce or potentiate the effects of antidiabetes drugs. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Medication dose adjustments may be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (Diabeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Acetohexamide is an older sulfonylurea that lowers your blood sugar by pushing your pancreas to release more insulin. Here's the tricky part with Ceylon Leadwort: in animal studies, this plant has gone both ways, sometimes raising blood sugar and sometimes lowering it. So we honestly can't predict which direction it would tip things for you.

If it adds to acetohexamide's effect, your sugar could drop too low, bringing on shakiness, sweating, confusion, or a racing heart. If it works against the drug, your sugar could run high instead. This is only theoretical, based on lab and animal work, not people. Still, if you use both, check your blood sugar more closely and let your doctor or pharmacist know before starting.

Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy.
