Why this applies to Almotriptan

Almotriptan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist: your migraine medicine almotriptan is partly cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. A compound in Ceylon Leadwort, plumbagin, has been shown in test-tube studies to slow that same enzyme down. If that held true in people, your body might clear almotriptan a little slower, letting it build up.

In plain terms, that could mean a stronger dose effect, things like tingling, flushing, drowsiness, a tight or heavy feeling in the chest or throat, or a faster heartbeat. The honest part: this is only lab-level evidence and has never been reported in actual people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since almotriptan affects blood vessels, please run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. About Almotriptan

What Is Almotriptan Used For?

Brand names: Axert, Almogran

Almotriptan tablets are used to treat migraine headache attacks — with or without aura — as they happen. They are not for preventing migraines before they start.

In adults, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine attacks. In adolescents ages 12 to 17, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine headache pain in those who typically have attacks lasting 4 hours or more when untreated. Note that in adolescents, the effect on migraine-related symptoms such as nausea and light sensitivity was not established in clinical trials. Almotriptan is not indicated for cluster headache or for hemiplegic or basilar migraine.
