Why this applies to Alteplase, tPA

Alteplase, tPA falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

There is some concern that Ceylon leadwort might potentiate the effects of anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs and possibly increase the risk of bleeding. Ceylon leadwort root extract has been shown to decrease platelet adhesion and prolong bleeding in animals. However, this effect has not yet been demonstrated in humans. Until more is known, use cautiously in patients taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the thing about alteplase (tPA): it's a powerful clot-busting medicine given in the hospital for emergencies like a stroke, a heart attack, or a serious blood clot in the lungs. Because it dissolves clots so aggressively, bleeding is already its main risk. Ceylon Leadwort, in animal studies, seems to make platelets less sticky and lengthen bleeding time, so layering it on top could in theory add to that bleeding risk.

I want to be honest that this concern comes from lab and animal research only, and it hasn't been shown in people. Also, alteplase is a one-time hospital treatment, so it's not something you'd casually combine at home. Still, if you take this supplement, tell your care team, since they need the full picture before giving any clot-dissolving drug.

Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts.
