Defibrotide Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

There is some concern that Ceylon leadwort might potentiate the effects of anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs and possibly increase the risk of bleeding. Ceylon leadwort root extract has been shown to decrease platelet adhesion and prolong bleeding in animals. However, this effect has not yet been demonstrated in humans. Until more is known, use cautiously in patients taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with Defibrotide: it's a clot-preventing medicine given in the hospital for a serious liver complication after a stem-cell transplant. It already nudges your body toward less clotting and a little more bleeding. Ceylon Leadwort may lean the same way. In animal studies, its root extract reduced how well platelets stick together and made bleeding last longer, so stacking the two could add up and raise your bleeding risk (think unusual bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding that's slow to stop).

That said, this concern comes only from lab and animal research, not human studies, so it's a theoretical caution rather than a proven problem. Since defibrotide is used in a closely monitored hospital setting, please loop in your care team before using this herb.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
