Dronabinol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9. Drugs that are metabolized by CYP2C9 include celecoxib (Celebrex), diclofenac (Voltaren), fluvastatin (Lescol), glipizide (Glucotrol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), irbesartan (Avapro), losartan (Cozaar), phenytoin (Dilantin), piroxicam (Feldene), tamoxifen (Nolvadex), tolbutamide (Tolinase), torsemide (Demadex), and S-warfarin (Coumadin).

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break down dronabinol. Plumbagin, the active compound in Ceylon Leadwort, has been shown in lab dish studies to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, dronabinol could clear out of your system more slowly and build up, which might make its effects stronger.

For dronabinol, stronger effects could mean more dizziness, drowsiness, a 'high' or spacey feeling, confusion, fast heartbeat, or low blood pressure when you stand up. To be clear, this has never actually been reported in people, it's only test-tube data, so I wouldn't panic. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for dronabinol. Your body clears this medicine partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Ceylon Leadwort contains plumbagin, which has been shown to slow down that same enzyme. In theory, that could let dronabinol build up a bit more than usual, which might mean stronger or longer-lasting effects like dizziness, drowsiness, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling unusually "high" or anxious.

Now, the honest part: this is only based on lab studies, not real people, so we don't actually know if it happens in humans. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but I also wouldn't combine them on your own. Please run it past your pharmacist or doctor first, especially since dronabinol already affects how you feel.

Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy.

What Is Dronabinol Used For?

Brand names: Marinol, Syndros

Dronabinol — available as capsules (Marinol, Dronabinol) and as an oral solution (Syndros, Dronabinol oral solution) — is approved for two conditions in adults. First, it treats anorexia (severely reduced appetite) associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS. Second, it controls nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy in patients who have not gotten enough relief from standard anti-nausea treatments.

Both uses apply to all available formulations, but dosing timing and meal instructions differ between the capsule and oral solution products. Always follow the specific instructions for the product you have been prescribed.
