These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Ceylon Leadwort interacts with whole categories of medication. Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Ceylon Leadwort in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
1 of 3Why this applies to Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol
Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
If you wear the Ortho Evra (Evra) patch, here's the gist. Ceylon Leadwort contains plumbagin, which in lab dishes slowed down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. The estrogen part of your patch (ethinyl estradiol) is partly handled by that same enzyme, so in theory the supplement could let a bit more estrogen build up in your body.
Important: this has only been seen in test-tube studies, never in real people, so the evidence is weak. If anything did happen, higher estrogen can mean more nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or bloating. This isn't a reason to panic or change your patch. Since it's a birth control method, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding Ceylon Leadwort.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The Ortho Evra patch delivers two hormones, norelgestromin and ethinyl estradiol, and your liver clears the estrogen part using an enzyme called CYP3A4. In a lab dish, plumbagin (a compound in Ceylon Leadwort) slowed that enzyme down. If the same thing happened in your body, your estrogen levels could drift a bit higher, which in theory might mean more of the usual hormone side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or bloating.
I want to be honest about the strength here: this is only test-tube data, and it has never been seen in real people. So this is a theoretical concern, not a proven problem. Still, before adding this herb, it is worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor so they can weigh it for you.

ESTROGENS
3 of 3Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under ESTROGENS.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The patch you're using (Ortho Evra) delivers two hormones, an estrogen and a progestin, to help prevent pregnancy. Here's the concern with Ceylon Leadwort: in lab studies, its root extract showed anti-estrogenic activity, meaning it may work against estrogen. In theory, that could blunt part of how your hormonal birth control works.
I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This comes only from test-tube and animal research, not from real people, so we don't truly know if it matters in your body. Still, because reliable contraception is so important, I wouldn't want to gamble on it. Before adding Ceylon Leadwort, please check with your pharmacist or doctor, and never stop your patch on your own.

Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain.
