Why this applies to Valsartan

Valsartan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9. Drugs that are metabolized by CYP2C9 include celecoxib (Celebrex), diclofenac (Voltaren), fluvastatin (Lescol), glipizide (Glucotrol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), irbesartan (Avapro), losartan (Cozaar), phenytoin (Dilantin), piroxicam (Feldene), tamoxifen (Nolvadex), tolbutamide (Tolinase), torsemide (Demadex), and S-warfarin (Coumadin).

Here's the gist: a compound in Ceylon Leadwort called plumbagin can block a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, at least in lab dish studies. Some blood pressure medicines lean on this enzyme to be cleared from the body. If that enzyme slows down, the medicine can build up a bit more than expected.

The good news with Valsartan specifically is that it does not depend much on CYP2C9. It's mostly handled by transporters and leaves the body largely unchanged, so this particular interaction is unlikely to hit Valsartan hard. Even so, in theory higher levels could mean more dizziness, lightheadedness, or a bigger drop in blood pressure. This is only lab-level evidence, not seen in real people. Still, check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. About Valsartan

What Is Valsartan Used For?

Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan

Valsartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have a weakened heart muscle. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (other brands) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.
