Clonidine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, taking danshen with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research suggests that danshen can produce dose-dependent hypotensive effects. Furthermore, concomitant use with captopril appears to potentiate this effect.

Here's the simple version: Danshen may lower blood pressure on its own, and clonidine already works hard to bring your numbers down. Put the two together and their effects could stack up, possibly pushing your blood pressure lower than you want.

If that happens, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, drowsy, or wobbly when you stand up too fast. I'll be honest though, this concern comes mostly from animal and lab studies, not solid human research, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Clonidine isn't a prodrug, so nothing tricky is going on with how it's activated. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Danshen, and keep an eye on your blood pressure if you do.

What Is Clonidine Used For?

Brand name: Catapres

Clonidine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Several products — including Clonidine Hydrochloride tablets, Javadin oral solution, Nexiclon XR extended-release tablets, and Catapres-TTS skin patches — are approved for this use, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Extended-release formulations — including Onyda XR oral suspension and clonidine hydrochloride extended-release tablets (such as Kapvay) — are approved to treat ADHD in children and teenagers ages 6 to 17, either on their own or alongside stimulant medications. Separately, clonidine injection products (Duraclon and others) are used alongside opioid pain medicines to treat severe cancer pain that opioids alone cannot control adequately.
