Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that danshen tincture and various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP1A2. However, this activity has not been shown in humans when theophylline, a CYP1A2 substrate, was used as a target drug.

Here's the gist: your birth control pill (Yasmin, Gianvi, or Angeliq) is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In test-tube studies, Danshen seems to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in people, the estrogen part of your pill could build up a little more than usual, which in theory might mean more estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or bloating.

The good news is that this is based only on lab work. When researchers tested Danshen in actual humans using another CYP1A2 drug, they didn't see the effect, so the real-world risk looks small. Still, Danshen can also affect blood clotting, which matters with estrogen pills. I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your pill on your own.

Pharmacokinetic research in healthy volunteers suggests that danshen might affect p-glycoprotein activity. Taking danshen extract 1 gram three times daily for 10 days prior to receiving fexofenadine 60 mg increases peak levels of fexofenadine, a p-glycoprotein substrate, by 27.4% and area under the curve (AUC) by 37.2%.

Here's the gist if you take this birth control pill (which combines drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol). Danshen appears to slow down a transporter in your body called p-glycoprotein, which helps move certain drugs in and out of your system. In one small study, Danshen pushed levels of a p-glycoprotein drug up by roughly 30 to 40 percent. So in theory, your hormone levels could drift a bit higher.

What might that feel like? Possibly more of the usual pill side effects, like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or mood changes. Drospirenone can also nudge potassium up, and Danshen itself may affect blood clotting, so I'd be cautious. The evidence here is fairly weak, so don't panic, but please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Your birth control pill (Yasmin and similar) relies on a liver and gut enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear the hormones from your body. Here's the catch with Danshen: when taken regularly for a couple of weeks, it seems to speed up that enzyme. In a small study, daily Danshen sped up the breakdown of a similar drug and dropped its blood levels quite a bit.

For your pill, faster clearance could mean lower hormone levels, and the real worry there is reduced protection against pregnancy, plus possible breakthrough bleeding or spotting. Oddly, a single dose of Danshen does the opposite, but ongoing use is what matters most here. Please don't stop either one on your own. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Danshen so you can stay protected.
