Why this applies to Axitinib

Axitinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Lentinan interacts with.

Laboratory research suggests that lentinan might increase the activity of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for a decrease in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking lentinan.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for axitinib (Inlyta). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this drug out of your system. Lab and animal research hints that lentinan might rev up that enzyme. If that held true in people, your liver could break down axitinib faster than usual, leaving lower levels in your blood. The worry there isn't extra side effects, it's the cancer medicine possibly working less well.

I want to be honest about the evidence: this has only been seen in test tubes and animals, never reported in actual patients, so it's quite theoretical. Still, axitinib matters too much to leave to chance. Please loop in your oncologist or pharmacist before adding any lentinan or mushroom-extract supplement.

What Is Axitinib Used For?

Brand name: Inlyta

Axitinib (brand name Inlyta) is used to treat advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), a type of kidney cancer. Inlyta can be used as a first-line treatment — meaning the very first treatment you receive — when combined with either avelumab or pembrolizumab, two other cancer medicines.

Inlyta is also approved as a single agent (on its own) for patients with advanced RCC who have already tried one other systemic (body-wide) cancer therapy that did not work or stopped working.
