Moringa and Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Moringa interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Moringa in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

1 of 3

Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone

Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Moringa interacts with.

Theoretically, moringa might increase or decrease levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some in vitro research suggests that moringa inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). However, other in vitro research suggests that moringa extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes. A pharmacokinetic study in patients with HIV shows no change in the pharmacokinetics of nevirapine, which is partially metabolized by CYP3A4, when administered concomitantly with moringa leaf powder 1.85 grams daily for 14 days.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

If you're taking this birth control or hormone pill (a combo of ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone), here's the honest picture with moringa. Both hormones are partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, moringa pulled in two directions: some research suggests it slows that enzyme down (which could nudge hormone levels up, possibly more nausea, breast tenderness, or spotting), while other research suggests it speeds the enzyme up (which could lower hormone levels and, in theory, make the pill less reliable).

The key word is theoretical. This is based on lab data, and a human study with a related drug showed no real change. Everyday culinary amounts of moringa are very unlikely to matter. Still, since reliable contraception is on the line, check with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated moringa supplements.

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

2 of 3

Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone also falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, moringa leaf extract might increase the levels and clinical effects of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro research shows that moringa leaf extract inhibits renal P-glycoprotein transport activity. So far, this reaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone combo). Moringa, in a lab dish, seems to slow down a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which helps move certain drugs out of the body. If that same thing happened in people, the hormones in your pill could build up a little, which in theory might mean more of the usual estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.

The big caveat: this comes only from test-tube research, and nothing like it has actually been reported in real people. Everyday food amounts of moringa are very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, since reliable birth control matters, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding concentrated moringa supplements.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

3 of 3

Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, moringa might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that moringa extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (which combines ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone). Moringa has been shown, in lab dish studies only, to speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2. Since your body partly uses that pathway to handle estrogen, the theory is that moringa could clear the hormone a bit faster and slightly lower its levels.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. This comes from test-tube research, not from real people, and it's rated as a minor, possible interaction. Still, with contraceptives even small dips in hormone levels make people nervous about reliability. Food amounts of moringa in cooking are very unlikely to matter; concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. If you want extra peace of mind, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Moringa

What is Moringa?

  • Nutritional supplement
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions

Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.
