Moringa + Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol
Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol brand names: Ortho Evra, Evra.
Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 3 drug categories that Moringa can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, moringa might increase or decrease levels of CYP3A4 substrates.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Moringa interacts with whole categories of medication. Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Moringa in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
1 of 3Why this applies to Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol
Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Moringa interacts with.
Some in vitro research suggests that moringa inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). However, other in vitro research suggests that moringa extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes. A pharmacokinetic study in patients with HIV shows no change in the pharmacokinetics of nevirapine, which is partially metabolized by CYP3A4, when administered concomitantly with moringa leaf powder 1.85 grams daily for 14 days.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The patch you're using (Ortho Evra) delivers two hormones, an estrogen and a progestin, that your liver processes partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. Moringa might nudge that enzyme, but here's the honest part: the lab studies disagree. Some hint moringa slows the enzyme (which could raise hormone levels and bump up side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, or headaches), while others suggest it speeds the enzyme up (which could lower hormone levels and, in theory, weaken your protection against pregnancy).
This is all theoretical, based on test-tube data, and one human study showed no real change. Food amounts of moringa are very unlikely to matter. If you take concentrated moringa capsules, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that moringa leaf extract inhibits renal P-glycoprotein transport activity. So far, this reaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
If you're using the Ortho Evra (or Evra) patch, which delivers the hormones norelgestromin and ethinyl estradiol, here's the gist. Lab studies suggest moringa leaf extract may block a transporter called P-glycoprotein that helps move certain drugs out of the body. In theory, that could let a little more of these hormones hang around, which might slightly bump up estrogen-type side effects like breast tenderness, nausea, bloating, or headaches.
The honest part: this is only test-tube and animal evidence, and it has never actually been reported in people. Normal food amounts of moringa are very unlikely to matter. If you take concentrated moringa supplements regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things. Don't stop or change your patch on your own.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that moringa extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your Ortho Evra patch delivers two hormones, ethinyl estradiol and norelgestromin, that work to prevent pregnancy. There's a theory here worth knowing about. In lab dishes, moringa appears to speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to break down the estrogen part of the patch. If that happens in people, your hormone levels could drift a little lower, which in theory might make the birth control slightly less reliable or cause breakthrough spotting.
I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. This is only from test tube and animal work, not from real patients, and it's rated minor. Food amounts of moringa in cooking are very unlikely to matter. Still, since reliable contraception is important, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before using concentrated moringa supplements.

About Moringa
What is Moringa?
- Nutritional supplement
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol support
- Inflammation
- Skin conditions
Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.
