Moringa and Saxagliptin, metformin XR

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Saxagliptin, metformin XR

Saxagliptin, metformin XR falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Moringa interacts with.

Theoretically, moringa might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs; however, research is conflicting.
Animal research shows that moringa can lower blood glucose levels. However, research in humans has not shown consistent blood glucose lowering effects.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: moringa may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own, and your Kombiglyze (saxagliptin plus extended-release metformin) is already working to bring your sugar down. Put them together and, in theory, those effects could stack up. That might nudge your blood sugar lower than expected, and could show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling unusually tired.

Now, I don't want to overstate this. The evidence is thin. Animal studies showed sugar drops, but human results have been all over the map, so this is mostly theoretical and rated minor. Food amounts of moringa in a meal are very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using a concentrated supplement daily, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor, keep an eye on your readings, and don't change your medication on your own.

About Moringa

What is Moringa?

  • Nutritional supplement
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions

Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.
