Puravive and Ibuprofen lysine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Puravive interacts with whole categories of medication. Ibuprofen lysine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Puravive in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

1 of 2

Why this applies to Ibuprofen lysine

Ibuprofen lysine falls under Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs — the group Puravive interacts with.

Puravive, a dietary supplement, contains several ingredients that may interact with anticoagulant drugs due to their potential mild anticoagulant effects. These ingredients include Kudzu, Panax ginseng, Phellodendron, and Propolis. Ginsenosides in Panax ginseng may decrease platelet aggregation in lab studies, but human studies have not confirmed this effect. Animal studies suggest low oral bioavailability of certain compounds in ginseng, which could explain differences between lab and human research. Propolis water extract and caffeic acid phenethyl ester, found in propolis, have also been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation in lab studies. Additionally, in an animal model, propolis taken with warfarin reduced the effectiveness of warfarin, suggesting a potential interaction with anticoagulant drugs. Lastly, Phellodendron contains berberine, which studies show may inhibit platelet aggregation.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence C

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: ibuprofen itself can already make it a little harder for your blood to clot, since it dampens the platelets that help form clots. Puravive contains a few ingredients (like Panax ginseng, propolis, and berberine from Phellodendron) that may have their own mild blood-thinning, anti-platelet effect. Stacking those two together could nudge your bleeding risk up a bit. In real life, that might look like bruising more easily, nosebleeds, or stomach bleeding (dark stools, stomach pain).

I'll be honest, the evidence here is on the weak side and mostly from lab or animal studies, not strong human data, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since both can affect bleeding, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates

2 of 2

Ibuprofen lysine also falls under Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates.

Puravive contains quercetin, which has been shown in studies to mildly inhibit the CYP2C9 metabolizing enzyme. This inhibition could potentially increase the risk of side effects from drugs. A small clinical trial with healthy volunteers found that taking 500 mg of quercetin twice daily for 10 days before using diclofenac, a drug metabolized by CYP2C9, increased diclofenac plasma levels by 75% and extended its half-life by 32.5% (source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29168292/). Combining quercetin with drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 could increase the risk of side effects, so caution is advised.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: your body clears ibuprofen using a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Puravive contains quercetin, which can mildly slow that same enzyme down. When the cleanup crew works slower, ibuprofen can hang around a little longer and build up, which may nudge up the chance of the usual NSAID side effects. Think stomach upset or irritation, heartburn, a higher bleeding risk, fluid retention, or added strain on the kidneys.

To be fair, this is based on limited evidence (a quercetin study used a related drug, not ibuprofen itself), so the real-world effect is likely modest for most folks. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially if you already take ibuprofen often.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ibuprofen lysine page

“Ibuprofen lysine (NeoProfen) is an injectable form of the NSAID ibuprofen, and this list warrants real attention, starting with its six major entries. The dominant pattern is bleeding: 202 of the 268 ingredients on file can thin the blood or slow clotting, which stacks on an NSAID's own tendency to irritate the stomach and blunt platel…”

About Puravive

What is Puravive?

Puravive
  • Weight management
  • Metabolism support
  • Energy levels
  • General wellness
  • Stress and brain health

Puravive is a branded, multi-ingredient capsule marketed mainly for weight loss by claiming to boost brown fat activity, but there is no published, independent clinical research showing the product itself works for this purpose. Some individual ingredients have been studied in laboratory or small human studies, but those results do not prove the finished blend is safe or effective. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have health conditions or take medications.

About Ibuprofen

What Is Ibuprofen Used For?

Brand name: NeoProfen

Oral ibuprofen products (tablets, coated tablets, and liquid-filled capsules) are used to temporarily relieve minor aches and pains from headache, backache, toothache, muscular aches, menstrual cramps, minor arthritis pain, and the common cold, and to temporarily reduce fever. The oral prescription tablet (Ibu) is also indicated for the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, mild to moderate pain, and primary dysmenorrhea (painful periods).

Caldolor, an intravenous (IV) form, is approved for adults and children 3 months and older to manage mild to moderate pain, to manage moderate to severe pain alongside opioid pain medicines, and to reduce fever. A separate intravenous solution, Ibuprofen Lysine, is used specifically in premature infants to close a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) — an abnormal blood vessel connection near the heart — when standard medical management has not worked.
