Olanzapine falls under Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates — the group Puravive interacts with.

Puravive contains Panax ginseng. Some research suggests that Panax ginseng might slow down the activity of an enzyme called CYP2D6 by about 6%. This enzyme plays a role in breaking down drugs in our system. One study (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32557706/) found that Panax ginseng slows down the breakdown of dextromethorphan, a drug that is processed by CYP2D6, but only to a small extent. It is important to note that not all studies agree on these effects, and some suggest that Panax ginseng might not have a significant impact on CYP2D6 at all. Nevertheless, it's important to be cautious if you're taking medications that are processed by CYP2D6 and consider discussing it with your healthcare provider.

Here's the gist for you. Puravive contains Panax ginseng, and some research hints it may very slightly slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Olanzapine is partly handled by this enzyme (though it's actually broken down by several pathways, with CYP1A2 doing most of the work). Olanzapine is an active drug, not a prodrug, so if ginseng nudged that enzyme a little, your body might clear olanzapine just a touch slower, leaving a bit more in your system.

In plain terms, that could in theory mean slightly more drowsiness, dizziness, or weight gain. But honestly, the evidence here is weak (only about a 6% change in studies, and not all studies even agree), so for most people this isn't a big deal. Still, since olanzapine affects your mind and mood, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Puravive.

About Olanzapine

What Is Olanzapine Used For?

Brand name: Zyprexa

Olanzapine treats schizophrenia and the manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder in both adults and adolescents (ages 13–17). It can also be used alongside valproate or lithium to treat manic or mixed episodes in adults. When combined with fluoxetine, olanzapine tablets and orally disintegrating tablets are used to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder and treatment-resistant depression in adults.

Olanzapine intramuscular injection (short-acting) is used by healthcare providers to quickly calm acute agitation in adults with schizophrenia or bipolar I mania. Zyprexa Relprevv — a separate, long-acting intramuscular formulation available only through a restricted program — is indicated specifically for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults.
