Puravive and Treprostinil (Inh)

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Puravive interacts with whole categories of medication. Treprostinil (Inh) falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Puravive in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

1 of 2

Why this applies to Treprostinil (Inh)

Treprostinil (Inh) falls under Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs — the group Puravive interacts with.

Puravive, a dietary supplement, contains several ingredients that may interact with anticoagulant drugs due to their potential mild anticoagulant effects. These ingredients include Kudzu, Panax ginseng, Phellodendron, and Propolis. Ginsenosides in Panax ginseng may decrease platelet aggregation in lab studies, but human studies have not confirmed this effect. Animal studies suggest low oral bioavailability of certain compounds in ginseng, which could explain differences between lab and human research. Propolis water extract and caffeic acid phenethyl ester, found in propolis, have also been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation in lab studies. Additionally, in an animal model, propolis taken with warfarin reduced the effectiveness of warfarin, suggesting a potential interaction with anticoagulant drugs. Lastly, Phellodendron contains berberine, which studies show may inhibit platelet aggregation.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence C

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the thing about inhaled treprostinil (Tyvaso): beyond relaxing the blood vessels in your lungs, it also works as a mild platelet inhibitor, meaning it makes your blood a little less likely to clot. A few ingredients in Puravive, like Panax ginseng, propolis, and the berberine in Phellodendron, may nudge platelets in that same direction. Stack the two together and, in theory, you could bruise more easily or bleed a bit longer from a cut.

I want to be honest with you though: this concern comes from lab and animal studies, not from solid human trials, so it's more of a maybe than a proven problem. Still, since Puravive isn't well studied as a finished product, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

Antihypertensive Drugs

2 of 2

Treprostinil (Inh) also falls under Antihypertensive Drugs.

Puravive contains quercetin, which has been found to slightly reduce blood pressure in individuals with mild hypertension (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17951477/). There is a theoretical possibility that it could enhance the blood pressure-lowering effects of antihypertensive medications.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence C

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for inhaled treprostinil (Tyvaso). This medicine works by opening up blood vessels, especially in your lungs, to ease the strain of pulmonary hypertension. It can also lower blood pressure elsewhere in the body. Puravive contains quercetin, which in one small study nudged blood pressure down a little in people with mild high blood pressure.

So in theory, pairing the two could add up to a slightly bigger drop in blood pressure, which might leave you feeling lightheaded, dizzy, flushed, or more tired than usual. I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical, minor concern based on weak evidence, not something well proven. Still, since your condition is serious, please run Puravive past your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Treprostinil (Inh) page

“Inhaled treprostinil (Tyvaso) relaxes blood vessels in the lungs to treat pulmonary hypertension, and it also blunts platelet clotting, which is why this list of 275 ingredients warrants real vigilance rather than a shrug. Two themes cover almost everything.”

Puravive
  • Weight management
  • Metabolism support

  • General wellness
  • Stress and brain health

Puravive is a branded, multi-ingredient capsule marketed mainly for weight loss by claiming to boost brown fat activity, but there is no published, independent clinical research showing the product itself works for this purpose. Some individual ingredients have been studied in laboratory or small human studies, but those results do not prove the finished blend is safe or effective. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have health conditions or take medications.

About Treprostinil Oral Inhalation

What Is Treprostinil Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand name: Tyvaso

Treprostinil oral inhalation is used to treat two serious lung conditions that raise pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs. It helps improve how much physical activity you can do.

Tyvaso inhalation solution and Tyvaso DPI are both indicated to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH; WHO Group 1) and pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD; WHO Group 3). Clinical studies establishing effectiveness in PAH primarily included patients with moderate symptoms (NYHA Class III) whose PAH was idiopathic, heritable, or related to connective tissue disease. Studies in PH-ILD primarily included patients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema, or connective tissue disease-related lung disease.
