Why this applies to Armodafinil

Armodafinil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the basic idea with these two. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear armodafinil (Nuvigil) out of your system. In lab dish studies, uva ursi seems to slow that same enzyme down. If that were to happen in people, your body might break down armodafinil a little more slowly, letting more of it build up.

What could that feel like? Possibly more of armodafinil's usual effects, like a racing or pounding heart, headache, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, anxiety, or stomach upset. I want to be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube work, and it hasn't actually been seen in humans. Since uva ursi is also only meant for short-term use, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before combining them.

Theoretically, uva ursi may alter the levels of drugs transported by P-glycoprotein.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: uva ursi has been shown in test tube studies to block a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which helps move certain drugs in and out of your body. Armodafinil is considered a substrate of that transporter, so in theory, slowing the pump could let a little more armodafinil hang around. If that happened, you might notice its usual effects feel stronger, things like trouble sleeping, jitteriness, headache, a faster heartbeat, or feeling on edge.

The big caveat is that this is only a lab finding, not something seen in real people, and it's rated a minor interaction. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since uva ursi is meant for short-term use only, it's worth a quick check-in with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Armodafinil Used For?

Brand name: Nuvigil

Armodafinil tablets (including the brand Nuvigil) are used to improve wakefulness in adults who have excessive sleepiness linked to one of three conditions: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), narcolepsy, or shift work disorder (SWD).

In obstructive sleep apnea, armodafinil treats the sleepiness itself — not the underlying airway obstruction. If CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep) is the right treatment for you, your doctor should try that first before adding armodafinil for sleepiness.
