Your birth control pill (Ortho Tri-Cyclen and similar brands) is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a test-tube study, uva ursi looked like it could slow that enzyme down. If that happened in the body, the hormones in your pill might clear a little more slowly and build up slightly, which could mean more of the usual estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.

Here is the honest part: this has only been seen in the lab, never confirmed in real people, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. Uva ursi is also meant only for short-term use. Still, before you pair them, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor so you're using both safely.

Theoretically, uva ursi may alter the levels of drugs transported by P-glycoprotein.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the practical bottom line on combining uva ursi with your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate combo). In test-tube studies, uva ursi seemed to block a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which helps move certain drugs around the body. In theory, blocking it could slightly raise levels of medicines that rely on that pump. The honest truth is this has only been seen in lab dishes, never in actual people, so it's a very weak, theoretical concern.

If anything did shift, you might notice a touch more of the usual estrogen-type effects (mild nausea, breast tenderness, or spotting), but this is unlikely at normal short-term uva ursi use. Since uva ursi is only meant for brief use anyway, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before starting it.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine.
