Your Ortho Evra patch delivers two hormones, norelgestromin and ethinyl estradiol, and your liver clears the estrogen part partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. In a lab dish, uva ursi seemed to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in real people, your body could clear the estrogen a bit slower, which in theory might raise hormone levels and bump up side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.

Here is the honest part: this is based only on test-tube data and has never been seen in actual patients, so I would not lose sleep over it. These hormones are not a prodrug, so they still work normally. Since uva ursi can stress the liver and should only be used short-term anyway, check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Let me put your mind at ease here. Your Ortho Evra patch delivers two hormones (norelgestromin and ethinyl estradiol) that act as birth control. The concern on file is that uva ursi might block a transporter protein called P-glycoprotein, which could, in theory, change how much of these hormones moves around your body. If anything, blocking that transporter might let slightly more hormone linger, which could mean a bit more of the usual side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, or spotting.

But here's the honest part: this was only seen in a lab dish, never in real people. The evidence is very weak and the interaction is rated minor. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, especially since uva ursi is meant for short-term use only. Still, give your pharmacist a quick heads-up before combining them.
