Panobinostat falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Panobinostat (Farydak). Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this cancer drug out of your system. In lab dish studies, uva ursi seems to slow that same enzyme down. If that held true in people, panobinostat could clear more slowly and build up, which might mean stronger side effects like nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, low blood counts, or heart rhythm changes.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is only a theoretical, test-tube concern and has not been shown in actual patients. Still, since panobinostat is a serious chemo drug with a narrow safety margin, I wouldn't add uva ursi on your own. Please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. What Is Panobinostat Used For?

  • Panobinostat is used in combination with bortezomib (Velcade) and dexamethasone to treat people with multiple myeloma (a type of cancer of the bone marrow) who have already been treated two other medications, including bortezomib (Velcade). Panobinostat is in a class of medications called histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors. It works by killing cancer cells.
