Pitavastatin falls under GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may increase levels of drugs metabolized by glucuronidation.
In vitro, uva ursi extract appears to strongly inhibit UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A1 (UGT1A1). However, uva ursi extract does not appear to inhibit UGT1A1 in animal models. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for pitavastatin (Zypitamag, Nikita): your body clears a good chunk of this statin through a process called glucuronidation, using an enzyme known as UGT1A1. In a lab dish, uva ursi seemed to block that enzyme pretty strongly. If that happened in real life, pitavastatin levels could climb, which in theory raises the odds of statin side effects like muscle aches, soreness, or weakness.

But I want to be honest about how shaky this is. The blocking effect showed up in test tubes only, didn't hold up in animal studies, and has never actually been seen in people. So it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Pitavastatin isn't a prodrug, so the direction (more drug, not less) makes sense. Since uva ursi should only be used short-term anyway, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before combining them.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Pitavastatin Used For?

Brand names: Zypitamag, Nikita

Pitavastatin tablets are used alongside a cholesterol-lowering diet to reduce LDL-C (low-density lipoprotein, or "bad" cholesterol) in adults with primary hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol not caused by another disease).

Livalo, Pitavastatin Calcium (tablet), and some other pitavastatin tablet products are also approved for adults and children aged 8 years and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) — an inherited condition that causes very high LDL-C from birth. Zypitamag is labeled only for adults with primary hyperlipidemia; its labeling does not include the pediatric HeFH indication.
