Uva Ursi and Rifabutin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Rifabutin

Rifabutin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with uva ursi and rifabutin. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear rifabutin, and lab studies suggest uva ursi might slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, rifabutin could build up slightly, which might mean more of its usual effects, like stomach upset, low blood counts, joint or muscle aches, or that harmless but startling orange-red color in your urine, tears, and sweat.

The important part: this is only a test-tube finding and has never been shown in actual people, so I don't want you to worry. Still, since you're treating a serious infection, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before adding uva ursi.
