Ruxolitinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for ruxolitinib (Jakafi, Opzelura). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medicine from your body. In lab dish studies, uva ursi seems to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, ruxolitinib could build up a bit higher than expected, which might mean more of its typical side effects, like low blood counts, bruising or bleeding, dizziness, or a higher chance of infection.

The important part: this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube data, and it has not been shown in actual people. So I wouldn't panic. Still, ruxolitinib is a serious cancer medicine, and uva ursi can stress the liver, so please check with your pharmacist or oncologist before combining them.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Ruxolitinib

What Is Ruxolitinib Used For?

Brand names: Jakafi, Opzelura

Ruxolitinib is approved to treat several serious blood and immune conditions in adults, and some in patients as young as 12. It is used for myelofibrosis (a bone marrow disorder that disrupts normal blood cell production), polycythemia vera (a condition where the bone marrow makes too many red blood cells), and two forms of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) — a complication that can occur after a stem cell transplant.

For polycythemia vera, it is specifically for patients who have not responded well to, or cannot tolerate, a medication called hydroxyurea. For chronic GVHD, it is used after at least one or two other treatments have failed.
