Sertraline falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Zoloft (sertraline): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear it out. In lab dish studies, uva ursi seemed to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in real people, sertraline could clear a bit slower and build up slightly, which might mean more of its usual side effects like nausea, drowsiness, jitteriness, headache, or trouble sleeping.

The big caveat: this has only been seen in test tubes, not in actual humans, so it's theoretical and likely minor for most folks taking short courses of uva ursi for a urinary infection. Still, since uva ursi can also stress the liver, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially long-term.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Sertraline Used For?

Brand name: Zoloft

Sertraline treats a range of mental health conditions. All formulations are approved for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The oral solution (including Zoloft oral solution) and several tablet formulations are also approved for panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

For OCD specifically, the capsule formulations and some tablet products are approved for use in adults and children aged 6 and older. Sertraline hydrochloride tablets (plain, not film-coated) are approved for OCD in pediatric patients as well. However, sertraline is not approved for major depressive disorder in children — only in adults.
