L-Glutamine Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Glutamine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy
L-Glutamine is a dietary supplement by Absorb Health with 1 active ingredient. Its ingredients are commonly taken for muscle recovery and sports performance, gut health and 'leaky gut', recovery from severe illness or injury.Based on those ingredients, 50 medications have a known interaction with it, the most serious rated moderate. The ingredients most likely to interact are L-Glutamine. Use the checker below to test your specific medication, or read the full HelloPharmacist Interaction Report.

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-Glutamine, an amino acid your body makes naturally and uses for gut and immune function, especially during times of stress, illness, or intense physical activity. The powder form lets you mix it into liquid or food at whatever dose works for you.
There are no inactive ingredients listed for this product.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Glutamine is rated Effective for sickle cell disease. For HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma, the evidence is Possibly Effective — meaning there's some promising research, but we'd need more data to be certain.
The evidence for other uses isn't established in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Glutamine is generally well tolerated by healthy adults. The most common side effects from oral powder are digestive — belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. High doses (10–30 grams daily in studies of sickle cell disease) are more likely to trigger GI upset; one person's dizziness resolved when the dose was cut in half.
Two people with bipolar disorder reported mania or hypomania while taking glutamine, so people with a history of mood disorders should be cautious. If you have kidney or liver disease, use this supplement only under medical supervision.
During pregnancy, L-Glutamine is rated Likely Safe. During breastfeeding, there isn't enough reliable safety data, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking supplement doses while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsant medications (seizure drugs), check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding L-Glutamine. The theoretical concern is that glutamine may reduce how well these medications work, but no human cases have been reported yet.
Use the medication checker below to confirm your specific drugs, or ask your healthcare provider directly.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Glutamine may help with sickle cell disease and possibly with recovery from surgery, critical illness, or HIV-related weight loss — but if you take an anticonvulsant (seizure) medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist first. Healthy adults typically tolerate it well, though digestive side effects can occur, especially at higher doses.
Anyone with kidney or liver disease, bipolar disorder, or who's breastfeeding should discuss it with their healthcare provider before starting.

L-Glutamine by Absorb Health Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Glutamine by Absorb Health has one documented interaction category: anticonvulsant medications (seizure drugs).
Glutamine is broken down in your body into glutamate, an excitatory brain chemical that theoretically may work against how anticonvulsants do their job — but this hasn't been reported in actual patients yet, so it remains theoretical.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Anticonvulsant drugs are the medications you'd want to double-check before starting this product. If you take any seizure medication, run it through the checker on this page or talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding L-Glutamine.
Altogether, these interactions span 50 individual medications.
No other medication types show documented interactions with L-Glutamine in our data. That said, absence of documented interactions isn't a guarantee none exist — if you're on any prescription medication not listed above, it's worth a quick confirmation with your own healthcare provider.
