Here's the simple version: diethylpropion is itself a stimulant, very much like an amphetamine, that perks up your fight-or-flight system to curb appetite. 1,3-DMBA is also a powerful stimulant. Stacking two stimulants together can be like flooring the gas pedal twice, so the worry is too much pressure on your heart and blood vessels.

With this combo you could see a faster or pounding heartbeat, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, headache, and in serious cases chest pain or stroke risk. I'll be honest that this specific warning is theoretical and based on animal data, so it isn't strongly proven. Even so, 1,3-DMBA is an unapproved, FDA-flagged ingredient I'd steer clear of. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

What Is Diethylpropion Used For?

Brand names: Radtue, Tenuate, Durad, Tenuate Dosepan

Diethylpropion is used to help manage exogenous obesity (excess body weight from outside factors like diet) in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher who haven't lost enough weight through diet and exercise alone. It is meant to be used for only a few weeks as part of a calorie-restricted diet plan.

All available tablet products — both the immediate-release tablets and the extended-release tablets — are approved for this purpose. Each is approved for use as a single medication only; combining diethylpropion with any other weight-loss drug is not allowed.
