Why this applies to Linagliptin, Metformin Hydrochloride

Linagliptin, Metformin Hydrochloride falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Ceylon leadwort root extract has been shown to both increase and decrease blood glucose levels in animal research. This effect has not yet been demonstrated in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might reduce or potentiate the effects of antidiabetes drugs. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Medication dose adjustments may be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (Diabeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Jentadueto XR combines two diabetes medicines, linagliptin and metformin, that work together to lower your blood sugar. Here's the wrinkle with Ceylon Leadwort: in animal studies, it has gone both ways, sometimes pushing blood sugar down and other times nudging it up. We simply don't have human data to know which direction wins, so this is a theoretical concern rather than a proven one.

The practical worry is unpredictability. If the supplement adds to your medication's effect, your sugar could drop too low, leaving you shaky, sweaty, dizzy, or confused. If it works against it, your sugar might run high instead. Please don't stop or change your medication on your own. If you want to try this supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep a close eye on your home glucose readings.

What is Ceylon Leadwort?

  • Digestive complaints and poor appetite
  • Skin conditions and wounds (applied to the skin)
  • Joint pain and swelling
  • Traditional 'metabolism-boosting' tonics
  • Antimicrobial folk remedy

Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy.
